Jobcentre plus to get an upgrade

Public Service reports that Minister of State for Employment, Jim Knight, has suggested a new vision for Jobcentre Plus. At a speech to the left-leaning Work Foundation recently, the minister is reported to have said that access to the internet is crucial for people to search for jobs effectively and email their CV and, therefore, every person must have internet access so they can search for jobs, improve computer skills and complete online courses.

It seems that the minister is envisioning Jobcentre as becoming a publicly-supported internet cafe as well as a jobs portal. The minister also spoke about making adding elements of “social media” to the offering.

Jobcentre Plus is one of the best resources for job seekers. However, one must accept that the demographics of the audience is limited to lower level jobs. Trying to make Jobcentre Plus another all encompassing job board is a dubious vision. Besides, there are already other options out: they are called quality job boards.
