Job numbers and salaries show growth in IT sector

Latest research from specialist IT recruitment website CWJobs.co.uk and  reveals that job numbers and salaries show continued growth in IT sector with permanent salaries improving at the fastest rate for three years,   job postings for contract IT workers up 25% and Agile seeing a 59% increase in demand.

According to the study developers dominated the recruitment space, making up 41% of all IT jobs advertised by the final quarter of 2011. Contract IT personnel were also in high demand, with a 25% increase in year-on-year postings.

SQL was the most sought after skill in 2011; however, demand for software development methodology, Agile, went up by 59% in the number of permanent job postings over the year (Q4 2010 to Q4 2011), further demonstrating its widespread adoption in the industry.

28% more jobs were advertised in London year-on-year in thefinal quarter of 2011. The report flags that this relative increase may be due to the increased investment in the Tech City initiative in East London. By the end of 2011, 77% of all permanent jobs advertised were in the Southern and Western regions of England.

The public sector shows the probable impact of the goverment cuts with public sector IT roles experiencing nine consecutive quarters of decline, with a 16% decrease in jobs in the last quarter of 2011. However, following the significant drop in IT vacancies in in the financial sector in 2009 and 2008 due to the recession, this sector saw significant improvements in 2011 with 21% of all IT jobs.

Richard Nott, Website Director at CWJobs commented, ”In 2011 we saw a reasonable bounce in the sector. While there’s no denying the impact thee conomy has had on the rate of growth, these statistics show that there’s recovery happening and the private sector and the South East of England are leading this.

“Last year the spotlight was on the IT industry, particularly on areas such as security and mobile. As new issues and opportunities continue to shape the sector, skills requirements and job opportunities will change accordingly.”

TheCWJobs.co.uk/ JobAdsWatch.co.uk data is based on key information taken from all the jobs advertised in the UK’s leading IT and multi-sector recruitment websites, together with jobs advertised in IT business magazines, as well asnational and selected regional press.

Leading generalist job board CV-Library is debuting its first ever TV campaign in January 2012.

The six week campaign will see the 30 second advert being aired over 1,200 times on a wide range of premium digital channels. The first advert will air on Monday 9th January during Dragons’ Den at 6pm on Dave, and then go one to be viewed by 5.5 million ABC1 adults with a total of 22 million viewings.

CV-Library engaged the creators of the massively successful MoneySupermarket.com and Confused.com to create a hard-hitting, highly responsive advert.

“Our advert doesn’t include any hidden messages like so many do these days,” says Lee Biggins, Managing Director of CV-Library. “Instead, we’ve created a very simple message which is ultimately designed to drive  candidates directly to the site. We’re demonstrating to candidates how quick and easy it is to apply  for jobs online.”

The adverts guide the user through the site, from uploading a CV to searching and applying for jobs and demonstrating the variety of jobs available across all  sectors.

Survey finds skills IT skills shortage in UK

61% of IT pros believe there is currently a skills shortage in the UK and that this is preventing the UK IT industry from competing with the US a survey from CWJobs.co.uk has found.

Despite Britain being perceived as a leading European market in terms of having the best job prospects, being the best place to study IT and leader the IT industry, the survey of 1,300 IT professionals revealed that showed that they believe that more must be done if  the UK is to compete the the US.

The survey revealed three things needed to tackle skills shortage in the UK:

  • Encourage more businesses to offer IT apprenticeships (28%)
  • Get the Government to invest more in IT degrees and training courses (18%)
  • Improve the quality of secondary and further IT education (20%)

Richard Nott, Website Director at CWJobs comments, “It’s been a year since the Tech City initiative was announced, and this has undoubtedly helped to position London as the Digital Capital of Europe. However if we are to take on Silicon Valley it’s imperative that the Government invests in helping young IT pros to skill-up, as well as investing in tech businesses. If the Government fails to do this, our IT specialists may be tempted to move abroad for better pay or to improve their skills set, which we can’t afford to risk.”
